Targeted disinfection & sanitization methods
High-temperature steaming
High-temperature steaming is an eco-friendly, yet extremely effective sanitization & disinfection method. Steam cleaning utilizes pressurized tap water without the addition of chemical disinfectants. Based on the device model, the water is heated to 115-160°C. The vapor used in cleaning contains only 4-6% of water. The efficiency of steam cleaning is based primarily on heat. Properly performed steam cleaning can remove up to 99.999% of enveloped viruses (e.g. coronaviruses).
Steam cleaning is a very versatile cleaning method both in commercial and home settings. It can be used to sanitize almost any non-porous surfaces, including tiles, floors, tabletops, bathroom fixtures, mirrors, windows and kitchen appliances. It can also be used on fabrics, including upholstery, mattresses, curtains, and carpets. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation utilizes short-wavelength ultraviolet C (UVC) light. In technical terms, UVC are wavelengths between 200 nm and 300 nm. Practically, this means that we are dealing here with wavelengths shorter than visible light, and longer than X-rays. Exposure to UVC kills viruses, including coronaviruses by destroying nucleic acids and damaging their RNA (or DNA and RNA of other types of viruses and bacteria).
UV light cleaning is applicable primarily in settings where conventional, liquid-based cleaning methods may not be used. This includes porous surfaces such as concrete, paving stones, limestone, marble, or unsealed hardwood, as well as electronic devices and some industrial equipment.
There are different UVC sanitization devices, from handheld ones, through free-standing lamps to remote-controlled robots. Hydrogen peroxide sanitization
Hydrogen peroxide is a commonly used alternative to chlorine-based bleaches. It is environmentally friendly, and creates no disposal issues, as it simply degrades to oxygen and water. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. leading public health institute) lists Hydrogen Peroxide solutions on their list of high-level disinfectants and chemical sterilants. According to The World Economic Forum, concentrations of Hydrogen Peroxide as low as 0.5% are effective against removing coronaviruses from surfaces.
In addition to its use on surfaces, hydrogen peroxide may be also used for air purification. The International Air Transport Association recommends hydrogen peroxide sterilization for air disinfection at airport terminals.
